Simon Smith has become the fourth candidate to be fired by Sir Alan Sugar from the current series of The Apprentice
Week 4 of the Apprentice saw the teams heading to Bluewater shopping centre in Kent with a simple brief, to take photos of happy punters, sell associated merchandise, and rack up a tidy profit on sales.
At the launch of the task, Sir Alan Sugar announced that he was tired of the bitching within the teams so instead of the usual boys and girls teams he mixed the candidates up - this meant that Alpha, where Helene Speight was project manager, included Lucinda, Raef, Kevin, Jenny M and Lee, while Renaissance, where Simon Smith appointed himself as project manager, had Claire, Alex, Jenny C, Sara and Michael.
Simon felt this was the task for him as he declared himself a photography natural, "I know about shutter speeds, I know how to set up a tripod, I know about single lens reflex cameras". And even better, Bluewater was on 'his patch' so he knew what the girls of Essex and Kent would want.
So with glamour in mind, Simon, Michael and Sara set out to buy props and source some cheap bubbly.
Helene's team opted for a celebrity lookalike theme. They held a casting session which featured Britney Spears, Cherie Blair, George Clooney and Del Boy Trotter lookalikes before settling on a look-a-like of David Beckham. Helene split her team in two, with a protesting Lucinda in charge of technology, and Raef and Helene in charge of delivery, while on the shop floor the sales team of Jenny M and Kevin are tasked with delivering customers into the hands of confident photographer Lee McQueen.
While both teams are successful at pulling in customers to have their photos taken, both suffer catastrophic problems with production.
Back in the boardroom, the figures are revealed. Helene's Alpha team took £738.83 for their photos, but spent £592.93 - a profit of £145.10.
Meanwhile, Simon's Renaissance team took £503.42 but spent£577.23 - a loss of £73.81.
Sir Alan laid on a treat of a sail to the Isle of Wight and a dinner on board for the winners.
With Renaissance the losers, Simon picks Claire and Alex to accompany him back into the board room.
Claire uses every opportunity to defend her corner and angers Sir Alan to the point where he orders her back to the house and tells her she will be project manager next week.
He then considers whether Alex or Simon should be the one to go but soon decides that Simon, capable as he is, is out of his depth and so with a signal as clear as one to a Sky satellite dish, he tells Simon "You're Fired"
