Peter Moore, 12, from Stalybridge, Greater Manchester has been named BBC Young Musician of the Year 2008, for playing the trombone
Peter beat four other finalists at Cardiff's Wales Millennium Centre.
Peter, whose family all play brass instruments, performed with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Peter, who started playing trombone when he was just 6, is the 30th winner of the competition.
Peter is a pupil at Chetham's School of Music, Manchester, and triumphed over finalists from the percussion, keyboard, strings and woodwind sections.
An accomplished trombonist, Peter has held the position of principal trombone of the National Children's Band of Great Britain for the last three years and is solo trombone player with Wingates Brass Band.
Peter will follow in the footsteps of past winners, including Jennifer Pike, Emma Johnson and the 2006 winner, clarinetist Mark Simpson.
Peter competed in the final against Jadran Duncumb, 18, on the guitar; David Smith, 18, on the flute; Jim Molyneux, 17, a percussionist from Littleborough, Greater Manchester, and Erdem Misirlioglu, 18, a pianist from Ipswich.
The final of BBC Young Musician of the Year was hosted by ex-Blue Peter presenter Gethin Jones and singer and radio presenter Aled Jones.
The judges included former royal harpist Catrin Finch, 27, and violinist Nicola Benedetti, 21, who herself won the competition in 2004.
