Tonight saw the first round of televised auditions for Britain's Got Talent 2008 and the judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan have chosen the first batch of semi-finalists
The first show of the second series of Britain's Got Talent took us on an all-singing, all-dancing tour of the nation, stopping off at Cardiff, London and Manchester along the way and gave us tears of emotion and tears of laughter.
After the TV sensation that was Britain's Got Talent 2007, and found star talent Paul Potts, thousands of acts turned up for the auditions.
Lowlights this week included a man playing his own organ arrangement of
the Star Wars them and 20 year-old Donald Bell Gum who has to be the most untalented singer ever to appear on a live talent show on British television.
Britain's Got Talent always attracts its share of 'novelty' acts and tonight we were treated to 74 year-old Joan Gallagher and her assistant, Jim. If the sight of Joan in a leotard and fishnets was not enough to get you choking on your Saturday dinner, their act consisted of Joan lying on a bed of nails while Jim jumps on her, before she gets her revenge by placing a paving slab on Jim's back and smashing it with a sledgehammer - distinctly a case of "don't try this at home"
But for all of the lows, and the plain weird, there were also some real highlights.
Even Simon's jaw dropped at the sight of 27 year old Iona Luvsandorj, a trainee lawyer by day but tonight showing her amazing abilities as a contortionist.
Then there was 16 year-old Kate Nicholas and her border collie Gin. Their synchronised movements to a James Bond theme were spellbinding. Dogs are not supposed to be able to walk backwards but clearly no one has told Gin that.
Simon loved the act and told Kate "I've spent years looking for the next Lassie - this is it!'
Other highlights were Craig Harper, a club entertainer and vocal impressionist from Hull with his humourous take-off of Boyzone and a cheeky imitation of Piers Morgan!
Glamour was provided by the girls of string quartet Scala, a feast for the ears with their music and a feast for the eyes with their long legs and skimpy frocks...
The last act of the evening was Andrew Johnson. There was hardly a dry eye in the house and we suspect hardly a dry eye on a sofa around the country as Andrew gave a wonderful choirboy rendition of Pie Jesu.
And that was it for the first week of auditions. But fear not Britain's Got Talent fans, there are another six weeks of auditions to go, before the live semi-finals start at the end of May.
